Clearinghouse Database

Clearinghouse Database

Overview

The Results First™ initiative, a project supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, created the Results First Clearinghouse Database in 2015. Pew transferred the Clearinghouse Database to Penn State University and ended its work on this resource in 2021.

The Results First™ Clearinghouse is a searchable database – via user-friendly filters or an AI assistant – of more than 4.000 evidence-based programs in social policy areas such as behavioral health, criminal justice, education, and public health. About 60% of all programs are rated as having a positive impact based on the “most rigorous” or “high quality” evidence. Penn State University manages the Results First™ initiative, including the Clearinghouse.

Clearinghouse Data Sources

The Clearinghouse does not perform an internet-wide search. Results are drawn from 10 national databases created by trusted sources.

Unless noted below, key program data is captured monthly from the source databases, filtered into a common format, and stored in a searchable database. The common format makes it easier for you to evaluate search results. This process includes assigning a Results First™ Clearinghouse evidence rating based on the source database rating.

Ratings

Please see “Rating Colors & Systems” for details. Green = highest rating, Yellow = 2nd highest rating, Red = negative effects. There’s also: Blue = mixed, Grey = no effect, and a Black triangle = insufficient evidence.

Search Results

Search results are shown as a list with brief program descriptions. If you want more information about a program, click to open the program page which provides details including a link to the source material. You are encouraged to check the source material for details such as citations and program cost.

NOTE:

  • We are experiencing technical issues with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Teen Pregnancy Prevention Evidence Review (TPP) and those programs are not being updated. Please verify any search results at https://youth.gov/evidence-innovation/tpper.
  • The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) stopped updating in January 2018. The Clearinghouse still contains NREPP’s program reviews but links, where available, will direct you to a third-party archived version of the NREPP website.
  • Blueprints will go dormant in June 2025. Information will be available but not updated after that time.

Search Using Filters or AI?

While both methods search using the same filtering terms, such as a database name or rating, there are differences.

Filters: Check boxes using the existing list of key descriptors.

AI-Powered Search: Ask the AI assistant a question; it has been trained to answer questions from the database using the exact words in your request.

NOTE:

  • The Clearinghouse does not search the entire internet. It’s focused on the 4,000+ programs in the 10 vetted databases.
  • You cannot search related to costs or citations. At this time, Results First™ does not have a way to collect that information into our searchable database.
  • If you get a search result with a lot of programs, the AI assistant will offer to provide a spreadsheet that you can download.
  • The Clearinghouse should be just one step in your search process. Please verify all program details, including target audience, setting, and evidence sources, via the source material.
